Adult Spiritual Formation
(Jesus said) “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Adult Spiritual Formation Commission

Adult Spiritual Formation Commission invites new contributors, ideas and participants into the fold. Our mission is to help achieve spiritual transformation through offerings in faith and love. Do you have a passion that can be transferred into our parish mission?

Why we care about adult spiritual formation “If you ask me what holds community together, what makes this capacity for relatedness possible, the only honest answer I can give brings me to that dangerous realm called the spiritual.  The only answer I can give is that what makes community possible is love.  The first is love of learning itself.  The simple ability to take sheer joy in having a new idea, reaffirming or discarding an old one, connecting two or more notions that had hitherto seemed alien to each other, sheer joy in building images of reality with mere words that now suddenly seem more like mirrors of truth.  And the second kind of love on which this community depends is love of learners, of those we see every day, who stumble and crumble, who wax hot and cold, who sometimes want truth and sometimes evade it at all costs, but who are in our care and who for their sake, ours, and the world’s, deserve all the love that the community of teaching and learning has to offer.” -  Parker Palmer

Small Group Programs

•    Women Who Wonder (WWW) is a women’s small group ministry designed to make a space for women to nurture and explore their spirituality.  WWW is the result of the desire by CEC women to explore, wrestle with, and deepen their faith experience, and to do so in an environment that allows drop-in participation, and more importantly, no homework!  Monthly Meetings in our homes on the first Tuesday of every month, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  We start each meeting with a silent meditation to allow us to transition from our hectic day into this sacred 90 minutes of fellowship.  We then read a chapter from our group’s book, then, discuss how the reading relates to our personal faith journey.

•    Adult Bible Study – Every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. A study of the lessons of the day to explore the meaning and mystery of the text—weekly attendance is not required.  Contact: Pat Quant

•    On-line Study Group – Christ Church is exploring the use of technology to help us grow spiritually.  This on-line study group allows people to stay connected in study and prayer with one another over distances, from home or while traveling.  Contact: The Rev. Laurie Moyer

•    Centering Prayer – Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Study.  Consider this from Fr. Basil Pennington: “You know it’s pretty remarkable when you think about it that when you want to see your pastor, you make an appointment, you want to see the bishop, you make an appointment, you want to see the pope, you pull all kinds of strings, but you want to sit down with almighty God, you do it any time you want.  Pretty good, huh?”  Amazing things happen when we “sit down” with God.  Interested in learning more?  There are people at Christ Church who would love to introduce you to this ancient and simple way of praying.  Contact: Claudia Lewey or visit www.thecentering.org

•   Education for Ministry – If you are interested in taking a spiritual journey using theological reflection and Biblical study, Education for Ministries may be for you!  EfM is an educational program that encourages its participants to explore their beliefs and to develop their ministries in the body of Christ, while bonding with other members in a small group setting. Check out the website at www.sewanee.edu/EFM/EFMhome.html.  For more information, contact: Christ Church EfM co-mentors:  Aida Merriweather, Brigitta Piamonte, or Andrew Han.

A Transitional Prayer,

Almighty and Loving God,

We pray for our community during this time of transition. We pray that your presence may be known among us, guiding us in our journey. Help us to understand this time as holy, a time for discovery, renewal, and joy. We pray for the gifts of courage, patience, perseverance and discernment.  And when it is your will to do so, grant us a servant who will travel our new road with us – in your time, not ours.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
