Mistaken Identity: Soli Deo Gloria with Orchestra Gloria

Allen H Simon, conductor

Everybody thought we knew who wrote these beautiful pieces, but it turns out we were mistaken.

Some are just accidental; other outright frauds. What motivated J-B Weckerlin to write a fake piece in the 1800s and claim it was by Orlando di Lasso? Why did the respected Bach-Gesellschaft think that Kuhnau's cantata Uns ist ein Kind geboren was by Bach? Who really wrote the "Pergolesi" Magnificat? Should we tell the children that their favorite Bach song "Bist du bei mir" was actually composed by Gottfried Stölzel? Find out which pieces fooled publishers (and sometimes scholars) for years.

Lenten Carbon Fast 2010

As Christians we have a responsibility to be wise stewards of God’s Creation and each of us must decide how we can improve our stewardship to safeguard God’s Creation now and for future generations. The Diocesan Commission on the Environment suggests the following list of 40 carbon fasting actions everyone can consider as a part of your Lenten preparation for the Easter season. Each of these actions will reduce our production of climate change pollution and help to preserve God’s great gift of Creation.

Sermon: Last Sunday after Epiphany (Feb 15, 2010)

Preacher: Rev. Anne Jensen

Readings: Deuteronomy 26:1-11, Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16, Romans 10:8b-13, and Luke 4:1-13

I’m sure we all have some internal, intuitive understanding of the expression “mountain top” experience.  I confess for years I thought it referred to some special feeling that you get when after climbing for hours you reach a point where you can look out over the world below and marvel at how far you can see, how small the river or the road has become at that height.  Maybe there is a touch of relief at being able to rest and maybe there’s even a sense of awe at creation and a corresponding recognition of your own smallness.  It’s a good feeling.

A Transitional Prayer,

Almighty and Loving God,

We pray for our community during this time of transition. We pray that your presence may be known among us, guiding us in our journey. Help us to understand this time as holy, a time for discovery, renewal, and joy. We pray for the gifts of courage, patience, perseverance and discernment.  And when it is your will to do so, grant us a servant who will travel our new road with us – in your time, not ours.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
