What is a LEM? Actually that is an acronym for lay Eucharistic Minister. A Eucharistic Minister is a lay person who assists the clergy at the altar during communion, generally by administering the cup of wine to communicants.
Some of the Eucharistic Ministers are also Eucharistic Visitors. These people take the communion elements and a brief service to shut-ins, members of the congregation who are not able to come to church regularly. We also take the greetings and friendship of fellow parishioners to those we visit.
Lectors and Intercessors read the Old and New Testament scripture lessons during the service and lead the Prayers of the People.
These are some of the visible ways that lay people assist with the worship service.
